A quick guide to Solid Surfaces

Probably the best known is Corian although a number of other manufacturers offer solid surface worktops. The solid material (acrylics and plastics) is usually between 6 and 15mm over a substructure of MDF or dual core chipboard. A huge range of colours are available and solid surfaces usually allow for a much greater degree of customisation, curved edges and unusual designs are often possible.

The hard surfaces are extremely durable and allow for minor scuffs and scratches to be removed by the user and deeper more serious damage can usually be repaired by trained installers making the worktops a good choice in high use, high impact kitchens.

It is reccomended that you use trained, professional intsallers to get the best effect. Different materials are fitted in different ways, Corian requires templates to be produced wheres others can be fitted on site. Joints are usually bonded using resin and ground and polished back to produce a seamless effect with the appearance of one piece.

Well known brands include Corian by DuPont, Encore by Bushboard, Maia by Sylmar, Getacore by Westag Getalit and Axiom by Formica.
