The Kitchen Directory guide to the latest Kitchen Design Trends – Part 1

We are in a very privileged position here at The Kitchen Directory to get to see and hear about the very latest in Trends and Fashion in the world of Kitchen Design. The more you flick through our news & product ‘magazine’ pages the more you start to see the way things are going in design.

Over the summer we thought we would ask some of the key players in the UK Kitchen Industry for their thoughts on design and share their wisdom.  Many kitchen buyers start looking again in earnest in September; the summer is over and thoughts start to turn to the home once again (and dare we say it where they will be cooking the turkey on Christmas Day!)

So we thought now would be a good time to take a look at what’s around before you hit the showrooms!

The international design community has a massive impact on Kitchen Design in the UK. George Khachfe, Director of Varenna UK thinks the linear look is at the forefront currently

“I have found this year that the new direction is to go more linear with an island to give an overall sleeker look, rather than Peninsula with U shaped Kitchens.

We’re also going to see the might of light and dark, with white glossy lacquer and contrasting dark woods such spessart oak . In terms of natural materials, marble is making a comeback in the kitchen and dining rooms.  A range of dining tables, coffee tables and Kitchen worktops are available, helping to bring a room to life”.

Much like the world of Haute Couture what begins life on the ‘catwalk’ of design in Milan eventually comes to the high street and you can see this in the latest offering from Moben.

According to their new brand ambassador, the interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, the modern kitchen should become more like a living room in its design and feel with cabinetry becoming a piece of statement furniture in its own right. To capture this they have launched the Ellipse kitchen.

“the finished look is clean and uncompromised”

“Ellipse is a very exciting design statement which has a fantastic fluidity to it.” says Laurence. “It is obviously a very contemporary look but the elliptical shaped design has much more connection with the traditions of furniture making than it has with kitchen design which instantly makes it feel like a design orientated sitting space. That being said, all the appliances and features you could need for cooking are there; they are simply incorporated into the design so that the finished look is clean and uncompromised.”

Eamon Donnelly, md of Uform agrees that curves are important in the design process at the moment

“Curvy kitchens are a hot trend currently, as homeowners look to soften the edges and create a kitchen that is unique in design and family friendly, without any hard edge.

The trend for island units and open plan living particularly lends itself to the clever use of shapes in the kitchen, with a circular island unit becoming an instant focal point of the room. Concave doors can be used to create a fashionable ‘walk in’ island unit and fit seamlessly around walls, curving gracefully into corners for a completely streamlined look.
