‘The Secret Kitchen’ – a bespoke design by kitchen company, Mowlem & Co

A lack of space does not have to preclude a stylish kitchen. Now, busy urbanites (who eschew Nigella in favour of the multiple metropolitan dining options) need make do no longer with a pokey, ill-equipped, embarrassment of a galley.

The best dressed homes, however spacially challenged, can avail themselves of the award-winning skills of British modern bespoke specialists, Mowlem & Co to get the ultimate in hidden glamour. A covetable compact kitchen design can be fitted behind fold-away, floor-to-ceiling doors and positioned subtly against any wall, through a hallway, under the stairs, or in any part of an open plan living space, as desired. And when revealed, this gem of a bespoke kitchen is no wallflower!

Mowlem & Co created this ‘Secret’ kitchen for a classic London mews house and a time-poor family that needed only the fundamentals from a kitchen which would not dominate their open-plan living space. Positioned along one wall of a connecting corridor between the dining and living area on the ground floor, the kitchen sits neatly behind cleverly constructed folding doors with a flush, handle-less finish.

These full height units have been hand-painted in white to match the walls of the space, but when they are smoothly opened – and neatly slid back via a special mechanism into waiting ‘door docks’ – they reveal a bright, bold and glamorous run of kitchen units and appliances. The rich red laminate of the furniture is matched by a custom painted glass splashback and complemented by quartz worktops in a chic ‘Osprey’ colour.

Not a centimetre of space is wasted, customised storage – with the interiors as beautifully finished as the exteriors – is designed into every available area. Appliance specification also reflects this attention to detail and optimal functionality. There’s a Gaggenau fridge with a small ice maker, a Miele single oven and induction hob, a microwave, a Quooker boiling water tap (dispensing with a space and energy guzzling kettle) and a smart KWC tap over the stainless steel sink. There’s even a dishwasher fitted in below the fridge.

This ‘Secret’ kitchen was designed and built by Mowlem & Co to meet the precise specifications, space and style of this particular home … But the beauty of genuinely bespoke design means that something similar – or suitably different – could be created along the same principles for whoever would most appreciate such a smart solution. A similar design would cost from approx £20,000.
